Bio

Sylvia Smith is a self-taught artist who has developed her skills with workshops and classes and
reading books by well-known artists. She has spent most of her free time painting and drawing all of her life.
After over 20 years of painting in oils, she changed to watercolors because she admired their glow and transparency.
Now retired from a 34 year career in customer service with a major electric utility, Sylvia pursues her love of watercolor
as a full time painter. Many of her paintings feature birds, wildlife, and landscapes. 'I try to include something
unexpected or unusual into each painting to draw the viewer into my art', the artist confides. Her watercolor paintings
have appeared in several exhibitions throughout California and have won awards from County and local art associations.
She is a member of the Coachella Valley Watercolor Society and the Feather River Fine Arts Association. In another
creative outlet, Sylvia likes to paint wildlife animals on river rocks, calling her creations 'Cabin Critters'.
She gathers her supplies from excursions to local stream and river beds, looking for just the right characteristics to suit
each animal. Sylvia is a California native.
Both she and her husband divide their time between Lake Almanor
and Bermuda Dunes, CA. where they spend their winters -- both areas providing beauty and inspiration for her artwork.
